Creating a Thin Cartridge for Canvas
If you would like your students’ BNC OER+ grades to be sent back to your Canvas gradebook, you can do so by embedding deep links into the individual assessments that you’d like grades returned for, within your Canvas course.
You can do by following these easy steps:
Step 1: Go to your class and select the thin cartridge section.
When in BNC OER+ click on edit option and then click on “Thin cartridge” section.
Step 2: Select the items that you want to sync.
Once you click on thin cartridge option system will display a page with all the content items in the class. Select your school LMS
- Choose the assessments you’d like to deep link (i.e. assessments for which you’d like grades returned to your LMS). Use the filter option on the right to easily find you need. For example, Instructional Units allow you to see the chapters/modules and Quizzes will show you your auto-graded assignments, i.e. the self-checks and Chapter Quizzes.
Click Proceed
Step 3: Download the file
Once you click proceed, review all the assessments that you selected and if satisfied, click “Create and Download”. A zip file will then get downloaded to your computer.
Importing the cartridge in Canvas
Log into the Canvas course where you want to import the thin cartridge.
Once the import has been made all the links which were part of the thin cartridge will be created in the Assignments section. These links will all be paired with the respective assessments and resources in BNC OER+. (You can check the pairing by clicking on the links to make sure that you are brought over to the appropriate content item in the BNC OER+ course)
These links can now be moved to the appropriate modules in Canvas.
Some important pointers:
- Before importing a thin cartridge from BNC OER+ to Canvas make sure that BNC OER+ is configured as an LTI app within the class or on the instance.
- If students have already attempted a BNC OER+ assignment before the link has been set up in Canvas, the student will need to access the newly created link in Canvas to sync their grade to the Canvas gradebook.
