Adding a BNC OER+ Link to Canvas

I. Overview

BNC OER+ is designed to easily integrate with Learning Management Systems such as Canvas using a “Web Link” from within an existing Canvas section. Using this approach allows for easy navigation through Canvas and BNC OER+ resources without the need for additional logins, as well as automatic registration of new users. This reference guide explains these features and how instructors can setup a “Web Link” in their section.

Single Sign-On

Single sign-on eliminates the need for multiple logins when BNC OER+ is launched from a Canvas section. Once a student or instructor logs into Canvas and selects the BNC OER+ link within their respective section, BNC OER+ is automatically launched and the student or instructor is automatically logged in.

Auto-Enrollment

Auto-enrollment eliminates the need to manually create accounts and enrollments in BNC OER+. When a student or instructor launches BNC OER+ for the first time, their account is automatically created and they are automatically enrolled.

II. Requirements / Before You Begin

Before setting up a Web Link, you must have the following:

Active Canvas Section

You must have an active Canvas account with instructor-level privileges and an active section.

LoudCloud Courseware Link

Your LoudCloud class link is located on the Course Details page of your course:

Log into your LoudCloud Courseware course and go to “edit mode” by selecting the pencil icon:

Select “Details” from the menu bar and scroll to the bottom of the page to copy your Course Link. This is the link that you will set up as an integrated external tool in your Canvas course.

At the bottom of the page you will find the LTI Integration credentials, including the Class URL you will need to set up as an external link in your Canvas course.

LTI Connector

Canvas must be enabled for using a “LTI connector”. In most cases, this has already been setup by your LMS administrator.

Step 1: Navigate to the ‘Modules’ tab of the course

Go to “Modules” in the Course Menu

  • On clicking the button to launch Courseware in a new window, you will be taken to Courseware pairing page where you have to select either an assessment, resource or learning path to the link created in Canvas.

  • Once the pairing is done you will be taken to Class in Courseware.

In case you want to use the Thin cartridge.

The other way in which you can create Courseware links in Canvas is through the thin cartridge functionality. Following are the steps that can be taken to extract a thin cartridge from Courseware and then import the same in Canvas.

Step 1: Create a Thin cartridge.

When in Courseware the instructor has to click on edit option and then click on “Thin cartridge” section.

Once you click on thin cartridge option system will display a page with all the content items in the class. You will need to select the LMS for which you want to create a cartridge and then select the content items which you want to be part of the cartridge and then click next.

Once this steps are followed a file will be downloaded on your local machine which is the cartridge file.

Once in settings , click on import and select the cartridge from your local machine.

Select the cartridge and then click on import option.

Select the cartridge and then click on import option.

The cartridge will be imported in Canvas.

Step 3: Links will be available in module section launch them.

All the links will be created in the module section along with the folders. Users can launch these links, this links will already be paired with existing content in courseware.

Step 3a : In case of Rollovers.

In case you have copied links from a previous class or have used previous thin cartridge then system will provide 2 options when you launch the class link.

  1. To create a copy

  2. To select an already created copy in Courseware.
